SoCoNova - Freshly Awesome since 2009

SoCoNova (Social Computing Nova Scotia) is a place for people who work in the Nova Scotia government and have an interest (personal or professional) in social computing and social media.

SoCoNova is a loose, informal network, open to anyone, with no mandate, official status and is in no way tied to the Nova Scotia government. Treat this space as you would a coffee shop. No confidential or private information should be shared or posted. Only things that you could and would say in public.

There are people having conversations about social computing all around the Nova Scotia government. SoCoNova is a place to share, learn and connect.

There's an App for that.

White House releases an app for the iPhone that allows for streaming of live video, web chats, and more.

Facebook vs. MySpace class distinctions

Canada is Facebook country all the way. However in the States MySpace holds a significant market share. Recent research suggests that there is a class distinction between those who use Facebook and those who use MySpace. The former seems to have a more educated audience than the latter.

Food, Social Media, Business, and Living.

This is a really cool story about how some folks are using social media to make better connections between people, businesses, and food.

"From helping restaurants connect with customers in new and innovative ways to helping consumers locate good eats, social media and the web are making our cities more delicious places to live."

It's worth a look. I'd love to try to get something local happening but have no time.…

A Message from Biz Stone, Co-founder of Twitter

I will just paste his message below. Twitter users should have all received this email - Biz is informing Tweeps about the news Terms of Service. Maybe this could help out those folks working on policies for Twitter, Facebook, etc.

Hi,

We'd like to let you know about our new Terms of Service. As Twitter

has evolved, we've gained a better understanding of how folks use the

service. As a result, we've updated the Terms and we're notifying

account…

IPAC New Professionals Conference in Halifax -Winds of Change

Bonjour,

I hope that you are all aware of the IPAC New Professionals Conference in Halifax from October 26th-28th entitled "Winds of Change". I am assuming you are all aware from the endless amounts of emails we have received over the past 6 months - promotion is the key!!! The conference is just 2 months away and we are busy in preparing for what is shaping up to be a wonderful event.

I just wanted to let everyone know that the conference does have a Twitter account as… Continue

Facebook launches real-time search

For those of you who use Facebook, you may have noticed that the company is entering the search engine game - although they aren't competing against Google or Bing. The search engine is designed for real- time results and the status updates of members who have chosen to make their information public. It may be the first salvo in an attempt to upstage Twitter - whose… Continue

Facebook, Twitter Skills now wanted skills

This is a article, Facebook, Twitter Skills now wanted in the workplace, from today's Chronicle Herald on social media skills being sought by employers, especially in the communications, marketing and advertising arenas. Although it is not entirely pertinent to government (not yet, but getting there), maybe we will have new positions created that focus on "social media manager", "director of social media" and the… Continue

Timmie's succumbs to social media

Well, for anyone looking for validation around social media and its power, how about this one. A Tim Horton's outlet in Rhode Island decided to become a sponsor of the "Celebrate Family and Marriage Day" being organized by the National Organization for Marriage (an openly anti-gay-union group).

The outcry from just that posting, which I received via Twitter, was quick and severe as evidenced by the postings. I happened to be… Continue
